Warm, Spicy Herbs that Release the Exterior
It is pungent, warm and a little toxic.
It acts on the lung, spleen and stomach channels
CHINESE THERAPEUTIC ACTIONS:
Bai Zhi/ Dahurican Angelica Root can expels wind-cold and release the exterior, expel dampness, reduce swelling and eat up pus, and stop pain.
It is a drug of Yang.
WESTERN THERAPEUTIC ACTIONS:
febrifuge; analgesic; antiphlogiston; antibiotic;
antifongin; antidote
CLINICAL APPLICATIONS:
Bai Zhi/ Dahurican Angelica Root for headache and nasal congestion due to cold and fever
Prescription 14-07-1: Prescription of Shenbai San, or Shengseng San, good for treating febrile diseases
caused by Cold and epidemics of all kinds, no matter if it occurs to a manor a pregnant woman,
young and old, or of Yang and Yin. or acute and chronic.
Prescription:
One liang /50g of Baizhi,
half a liang/25g of Gancao/radix glycyirhizae/liquorice root,
three slices of Shengjiang/rhizoma zingiberis recens/fresh ginger,
10 cm/4 feet of Congbai/bulbus allii fistulosi/fistular onion stalk,
one Dazao/12 pieces fruchm jujubac/chinese date,
50 Douchi/semen sojae preparatum/femiented soybean.
Simmer in two bowls of water to make a decoction to induce perspiration.
If there is no perspiration,
continue the treatment, even if the patient has not perspired in the last 10 days.
Bai Zhi/ Dahurican Angelica Root for headache, vertigo, supraorbital pain, toothache and a facial pain of trigeminal neuralgia due to wind.
Prescription 14-07-7 in Bencao Gangmu: Headache and migraine that cannot be healed by other means.
The following prescription is good and effective. Only one dose will do.
It is the best prescription ever had.
Prescription:
Two and a half liang/100g of Baizhi, stir-fried,
One liang/50g of Chuanxiong, stir-fried,
One liang /50g of Zhigancao/radix glycyrrhizae/prepanta /liquonce root prepared,
One liang /50g of Chuauwu/radix aconiti/mother root of common monkshood,
One lhang/50g of Chuanwu/radix aconiti/mother root of common monkshood, prepared.
Grind the above drugs into powder. Take one qian/3.3g with a decoction of Cha and Bohe/herba menthae/herba of wild mint.
Prescription 14-07-8 in Bencao Gangmu:Severe intermittent headache with vertigo.
Duliang Wan
Preparation: Wash BaiZhi and dry it in the sun. Grind it into
powder. Make pills with honey the size of a bullet. Chew one pill and wash it down with tea or decoction of
Jingje/ herba schizonepetae/herb of fineleaf schizonepeta.
Bai Zhi/ Dahurican Angelica Root for leukorrhea due to dampeness
Prescription 14-07-17 in Bencao Gangmu: Leukorrhea. Bury four liang/200g of Baizhi in 0.5 jin (250g) of Shihui/calx/lime for
three days.Take out the drug and slice it. Then, dry it and grind into powder; take two qian/6.6 g per dose with wine,
two times a day.
Bai Zhi/ Dahurican Angelica Root for swollen and expeling pus of carbuncles, furuncle, sores and ulcer
Prescription 14-07-30 in Bencao Gangmu: Carbuncle and phlegmon with inflammation and swelling. Grind equal amounts of Baizhi
and rhubarb into powder. Take two qian per dose with Miyin.
Prescription 14-07-27 in Bencao Gangmu: Pyogenic infection with pain and hot feeling. Blend powder of Baizhi with vinegar
and apply to the affected part.
Prescription 14-07-29 in Bencao Gangmu: Onset of furuncle and sores. Pound one qian of Baizhi and one hang of fresh ginger with
wine to get one cup of juice. Take the warm juice to induce perspiration. The ailment will disperse.
Bai Zhi/ Dahurican Angelica Root for hemonrrhoid
Prescription 14-07-25 in Bencao Gangmu: Bleeding in hemonrrhoid and fistula.
Grind Baizbi into powder. Take two qian/6.6 g of the powder with Miyin per dose
Also boil Baizhi to make a decoction. Fumigate and wash the affected part with the hot decoction.
Bai Zhi/ Dahurican Angelica Root for epigastrium and abdomen pain due to ulcer.
Bai Zhi/ Dahurican Angelica Root for skin diseases such itchy skin rashes, freckles and acne.
Bai Zhi/ Dahurican Angelica Root for Mastitis
Prescription 14-07-28 in Bencao Gangmu: Onset of acute mastitis. Grind two qian/6.6g each of Baizhi and Beinmu/bulbus fritillaria
thunbergii/cirrhosa/bulb of thunberg/tendrilleaf fritillary into powder. Take it with warm wine.
Bai Zhi/ Dahurican Angelica Root for Snakebites.
Prescription 14-07-35 in Bencao Gangmu: Bite of a poisonous snake. A native in Linchuan was bitten by a poisonous snake.
He lost consciousness with the bitten arm swollen as thick as the leg. Shortly
afterwards, the patient had distention of the skin all over his body of yellow-black color.
A Taoist treated the patient by blending one jin/500g of Baizhi with newly fetched well water.
The patient was fed with the drug. He began to feel a mighty jumping in the umbilicus with the vomiting of
a sallow, foul smelling fluid. After a while, his abdomen shrank to normal and he came back to himself.
It is even better if the drug can be blended with a decoction of Maimendong/radix ophiopogonis/ tuber of
dwarf lilyturf. Also, apply powder of flaizhi to the affected part. Mother case: A monk from Jingchu Temple
was once bitten on the foot by a poisonous snake. Ulceration lasted a long time and no dnig had been
effective. One day, a monk traveling around saw the diseased monk and treated him in the following way:
He first washed clean the affected part with fresh water until white tendons were seen, It was wiped dry.
Then, the traveling monk applied powder of Baizhi with a little Danfan/chalanthitum/ chalanthite and
Shexiang/moschus/musk onto the affected part. A foul fluid welled out. The treat ment was given everyday.
After one month of such treatment, the ailment was completely gone.
Others
Prescription 14-07-33 in Bencao Gangmu: Detoxification of arsenic. Wash down two qian/6.6g of Baizhi powder with
well water.
Prescription 14-07-22 in Bencao Gangmu: Incessant nose blooding. Blend powder of Baizhi with the blood from the nose
and apply it to the root of the nose. Bleeding will stop immediately.
COMMENTS AND CAUTIONS: Dahurican Angelica Root/Bai Zhi has small toxin.
It can increases blood pressure.
In large doses it can cause convulsions and generalized paralysis.
Pregnant women and people with yin deficition should avoid to take it.
People with heat or high blood pressure should not take it.
So far, there are no known drug interactions associated with Angelica root/Bai Zhi.
Dosage: 3 to 9 grams per day
