Chinese Hawhorn(Shan Zha) has sweet, sour and slightly warm properties, and is associated with Liver, Spleen and
Stomach meridians.
WHY IT'S USED: In China, the fruits of Chinese Hawthorn have been eaten for stomach ailments or diarrhea.
They are utilized in prescriptions to dissolve food and resolve stagnant digestion caused by accumulations of meat, characterized by abdominal
distention and pain, or diarrhea. Hawthorn preparations are prescribed by physicians in Germany and elsewhere for
the treatment of diminished heart performance at the early stages of congestive heart failure, for angina pectoris, and to help in
long-term recovery from heart attacks. It is also used to reduce a sensation of pressure or anxiety in the heart area,
age-related heart problems and mild forms of arrhythmias. Hawthorn extracts have also been shown to
improve circulation to the extremities by helping to reduce resistance in the arteries. In modern China, clinical experiments have shown that hawthorn
fruit preparations lowers blood pressure, affects systemic vasodilation, lowers serum cholesterol levels,
and is useful in the prevention and treatment of arteriosclerosis.
COMMENTS AND CAUTIONS:
Use with caution in cases with Spleen and Stomach Deficiency.
People with gastritis or peptic ulcers should not take it.
people with Qi-energy Deficiency and diarrhea should not take it.
With Spleen Deficiency, popele who have no appetite should not take it.
Do not take it with Chinese Ginseng.
Dosage: 6 to 15 grams
Herb-Drug Interactions
1.Do not take it with sulfa drug. It will form crystal and cause haematuria, appearance of blood in the urine.
2.Do not take it at the same time with antibiotics such as streptomycin, erythromycin, gentamicin and kanamycin.
Shan Zha(Chinese Hawthorn) will decrease effectiveness of antibiotic.
3.Do not take it at the same time with alkaline drugs such as Acid Reflux Drugs and aminophyline such as bronchodilator drugs.
Shan Zha(Chinese Hawthorn) will make them decrease or lost effectiveness totally.
4. Do not take it with Tylenol, Ibuprofen, Asprine or chlorpheniramine. It increases toxins of the drug and hurts the Kidney.

One-seeded Hawthorn /Crataegus monogyna usually list in medicinal plant in herbals.
